I really liked it. Thought it was the best Batman movie so far.
I'm a big Bale fan too... He's a hell of an actor.
That said, I can see where you're coming from. The stoic brooding and the pursed lips did wear a little thin.
The writing and the darker tone helped a LOT, IMO.
Honestly... I think Bale is a good Batman (passable, at the least)... and Ledger will knock it out of the park.
