From my understanding, this is a reboot. The story that takes place is in an alternate timeline, although scenes from the original
Terminator are seen as a 3rd party view.
So essentially, Kyle Reese is sent back in time and is expected to meet the Sarah Conner of the original Terminator with those same exact conditions. But once he arrives, everything he was told to expect is completely different, setting up a different future as well.
