You're so very, very close to understanding the thinking behind the soundtrack. Yes, it is supposed to seem like its "dumbed down" like other big action movie soundtracks. By doing so, the subversive elements of the specific songs get to work through the scene. For example, do you know the lyrics to "All Along the Watchtower?" There is some clever stuff going on behind the song choices.
