The limit is on the maximum posts in a thread. The bigger a thread is, the more it bogs down the server because of a stupid way the software works.
We started closing threads at 10k posts a while ago to help this issue, and it's made a big impact. However, tonight made it clear that a 7k post thread would do it too, so we're gonna lower the limit down to 5k. It probably won't be enforced all that aggressively, but if a popular thread has over that limit, we'll probably shut it down so that the server can keep up better.
