I don't know if you have to see it all the way through to inoculate and prepare yourself for loving it.

But I do recall the numbness of that first viewing. I was already a Coen brothers fan. Loved Blood Simple, ADORED Raising Arizona, thought Miller's Crossing and Fargo were instant classics, even loved Barton Fink to the point of arguing with the group I watched it with [I wasn't alone in loving BF in the group, not THAT brave].

I didn't HATE TBL, just was disappointed. It seemed lazy, disjointed and shambling, beneath the esteem of the Coen nameplate. But on subsequent viewings, that laziness, disjointedness and shambles revealed themselves to be BY DESIGN. It provided a framework for whipsmart dialog.

Nearest analogy I can muster is TBL is like a real hot jacuzzi, painful at first, then soooo relaxing and enjoyable once you've given yourself time to acclimate to the environment.
