No one ever dies in their sleep from apnea. When you are asleep and you quit breathing your body will automatically wake you up. Assuming there are not drugs suppressing the autonomic response.
It's cumulative. Stopping breathing 20+ times a night even for a second increase the chance of heart disease, atrial fibrillation, CHF and more. Thats what will kill you.
But the best reason to get checked out is what has already been mentioned in this thread. Improvement in the quality of life by getting into reem 3 sleep faster and staying there longer.
If this is central apnea and not obstructive apnea all bets are off. You are a walking dead man unless you get help.
