Last time I was unemployed (10+ years ago), I decided to start my own business. Scary as shit, but the best thing I have ever done in my professional life. It's not for everyone, nor is it always the best path, but it worked well for me. I know the feeling of being out of work, with little kids and a mortgage - it sucks.
