Sadly, I agree. I think they painted themselves into a corner with the wedding storyline, and if this was a 1 off for a show with 13-15 episodes a season, it'd be okay, I guess.
But, a 3rd of the season, and likely to be the final one, this was a throwaway at best - with almost 0 apparent development of his supposed main villain of the season that we got a glimpse of after episode 1, Charles Augustus Magnussen .
Their teaser
Many Happy Returns I thought was a great short to wet your appetite, and I've just not been engaged with wasting time having to reestablish Holmes and Watson's relationship or dealing with the change due to his marriage.
The last Ritchie Sherlock movie introduced that whole Mary / getting married scenario, and I would have been fine with episode 1, and then getting back to a case at hand (primary case of the episode) with an underlying plot setup for the big villain for episode 3. Mary would have been best left out or a minor point of the story on par with their widow landlord, Mrs. Hudson.
There was really very little callback for progression of events from 1 to 2 & leading into 3- unless they really have us duped and events at the wedding and within episode 2 actually are subtle clues and pieces important to episode 3?
What do I know, I'm just hoping that they go out with a bang and saved the best for last.
