In the novel the zombies/vampires speak. They have intelligence. They are sentient... and they're not monsters. They've found a medicine and keeps them from attacking others. The signs that they are 'intelligent' is found throughout the movie with traps and such being laid. They have communities and are trying to cure the others as they have been cured.

The main character, in the end, turns out to be the monster. He's the one sneaking into their homes while they sleep and killing them. That's where the title comes from. Test audiences hated it and so they went with a happy cure ending. Blah. I was not pleased when I first saw it. The end undermines the movie.

I remember when he caught the girl...thing, and the guy...thing stuck his head into the sunlight in rage. it showed intelligence AND compassion...he didn't like the girl being taken. it obviously wasn't a mindless monster. I thought...wow this is gonna be interesting. and then they never revisited that concept ever again in the movie. I was disappoint..
