I don't think Jack is even keeled at all. He's always extra intense. In flashbacks he's running stairs in stadiums because he's bothered at work, he takes on all the difficult and hopeless cases. On the island he's the first to run off half cocked to find Claire or Michael. He takes on all leadership roles without any thought - do an inventory of food and don't share any of it, he'll keep the key to the gun case, etc.
