Both of the circumstances combined made me reconsider how we use social media. These two incidences were much bigger life events that may not have a place being blasted through with Facebook posts.

Maybe it is a relief to the people who have to make all those phone calls to not have to make them if the information gets out socially instead. Maybe a bit of disconnect for those peripherally involved is not such a price to ease the burden of the closest few.
Etiquette for the right reason is about ensuring comfort of others. Etiquette for the wrong reasons is picking on grieving people because they didn't think of you as soon as you would have liked.
