Ok... You might want to watch some walkthroughs on YouTube.
The save points are lamps you can light once you clear a boss or make it to a new area. You open shortcuts as you move throughout the area you're playing.
You'll get used to it man, trust me. Once you do, you'll love it.
I still can't put the damn thing down. It's been damn near a month now.
