I'd try some sriracha in your marinade if you already haven't.
As far a citrus, I was in Mexico last week sitting at a beach bar and watched this bartender peel a lemon and heavily dust it with chili lime seasoning and ate it whole. I noted that as a flavor profile to try back at home.
There's also a Pakistani place in my neighborhood that serves up sliced mangos with red pepper flake sprinkled on them, which is a nice play on sweet heat.
