to each his own. It's mainly only used for weapon switches, etc. but there are sometimes that it's nice to have. Playing Street fighter for example just doesn't feel right without a D-pad(although the new Street fighter sucks, just got it for free with Gold).
I think everyone has a bit of a story of how they came up and what drew them to their console to begin with. Once your in a PS or XB camp, I think most people stay there. Friends, familiarity, etc. Backwards Compatibility to play old games on existing console is also big because it gives a reason to stay.
