I think it's a combination of the evolution of Sutton's defense and getting the right guy in for the task as determined by Dorsey, his scouts and the coaching staff.
Nico Johnson was a two-down type of guy and it looks like Sutton is rapidly moving away from that in terms of lining up a prototypical 34 defense. He's employing a version of the Dick Bumpas TCU 425 more than anything at this point.
Guys like Derrick Johnson are ideal for that at the NFL level - long, rangy dudes with a little size. It's why I thought that Kyle Van Noy in the 2014 Draft would have been ideal for the other inside spot.
Depending on how he tests at the Combine/Pro Day, a guy like Mississippi State's Benardrick McKinney wouldn't be a shocker as our first round pick.
Eric Kendricks isn't going to test as well as his brother did and his size doesn't do him any favors. He's not a long guy - more compact at his size, which isn't much. They'll hope to compare him to someone like Bobby Wagner, but he's not as thick as Wagner, doesn't shed blocks like Wagner and most definitely won't have the measurables that Wagner did. And Wagner went in the later part of the second round. After the Combine, I'll be surprised if Kendricks goes before the fourth round.
