You do wonder where we'd be if we didn't worry so much about killing each other.
To a great extent, competition is good. Would we have landed on the moon if the Soviets weren't competing with us? Not sure. But then again, if we didn't spend so much on defense we might all have so much extra money that we'd have Mars settlements by now.
