Saw it tonight in 3d, thought it was awesome actually. Not alot of background on the aliens, but IMO, it's tough to really do that outside of what they did because, well it all just has to be thought up from scratch.
I love the idea of multiple dimensions and it's been used in multiple alien movies, so obviously if they're using it in movies, the government knows about it and it's likely a real thing.
Being a big SOA fan, liked seeing Jax, and being a IASP fan, Charlie in any movie is a good thing.
