This season is flagging for me a little bit.
Spoiler!
There's just nobody in this season that's a match for Raylan except Boyd, but Boyd's not in conflict with Raylan (yet). Maybe the black tar cartels from Mexico, but they're not in conflict with Raylan.
This has been a criticism of mine since season 3, when Quarles went down and Limehouse pulled away from getting into direct conflict with Raylan. Those two were great matches for Raylan. Sammy Augustine in season 4 sure was as well, but he was only a late season add.
The only real thing pushing Raylan right now isn't a big bad, but is his own misdeeds that he's going to be reeling from. That's a fascinating angle, but they barely touched on it this week.
The "can Boyd break out Ava" storyline is meh, because you know he's going to break her out. And it's only a matter of time before he dispatches Johnny and the Crowes. There's no suspense there.
The suspense is in how the work with Mexico is going to go, because like Raylan's issues with Art, I have no idea where that's going to go. But they're playing both those story lines really, really light right now. The more time they dedicate to them, the better this season will go.
