I'm not meaning to sound like a smart ass, but it's a lot harder to cover deep parts of the field with 2 high players than it is with 3 or 4.

I'm guessing teams are playing Cover 2 and Cover 4 in equal amounts, and disguising the corners in Cover 2 so it looks like they are playing Cover 4 at the snap.
Smith doesn't know whether to get ready to load up (since he predetermines deep throws so much) or look for the underneath route.
His little robot QB brain is just sparking and misfiring all over the place.
