I agree that the Big XII would be in great shape there, but I don't see how that undercuts the importance of football.
Every one of those schools that you listed (other than VA Tech) has an inferior football program that their in-state counterpart in the SEC.
Losing 2 great basketball schools to a football conference would underscore the fact that football is what makes a conference powerful. Otherwise, the Big East would rule.
