Yeah, my mom was a take charge type. When I started school, the TV went to Goodwill. When it's summer 'play outside' [though I did 10x my share of childhood reading too, but that was what other kids would call TV time, twilight to bed time]. When I was 'Dx' [ie, teachers tired of my classroom antics] ADHD, no Ritilan for me, she started making our own bread, grinding our own peanut butter, brown bag lunches were homemade
, raw carrot and celery, homemade zucchini bread and 2% milk from the school. All that kind of stuff.
Computers were the downfall on the TV front, though. I was obsessed with the school's TRS-80, and then when the Commodore 64 came out, I exerted my goodwill in that direction to get my parents to buy one. Only what to operate it on? That brought TV back into the house and the rest is history.
So no TV from kindergarten to mid-8th grade, though she didn't have a problem if I watched it at other kids' houses when hanging out. Just didn't want an 'idiot box' sitting around the house as a constant temptation.
