You were supposed to hate Hank at the beginning when he was a stereotypical racist, macho blowhard, but beginning late in season 3 he slowly morphed into a likable character for the audience. Last night's episode displayed this more than anything else:
1) Walt's tornado of destruction removes the humanity of everyone in its path except for...
2) Jesse
Jesse remains a redeemable character in a way that no other major character is. Hank wants vengeance irrespective of what happens to Jessie, and Skyler wants protection at all costs.
Walt's attachment to Jessie is his last vestige of humanity, and with the goading of Skyler, Saul, and the random placement of a menacing dude, he's giving the signal that he's letting go of that too.
