They argue that Gilligan really wants to establish that crime doesn't pay. Nobody complicit in this saga can redeem themselves, not even in a noble death. Perhaps his strongest statement is for everyone to die ignobly or slink off into obscurity.

I don't think Gilligan is that simple-minded. Killing Walt off isn't punishment considering he's knocking on the door of death anyway. I just can't see this show ending without something really bad happening to his family, and him being alive to see it. If you do that coupled with Jesse's already abusing himself, that makes for some pretty powerful tv.
