Probably because of the much higher population density Europeans lived in which diseases could thrive. As many Europeans if not more died from disease over the course of many centuries until the immunities kicked in.
Over in the Americas before exploration population was much more spread out and tribal meaning there was much less exposure of different viruses between pockets of population. My best guess
