I think it started to get a bit darker as the last Doctor was being phased out. I would highly recommend introducing the earlier Doctors before the reboot. The FX obviously suck, but the stories were still a lot of fun. I think 7 or 8 is perfect for these, as the FX usually aren't as important for kids anyway. The somewhat hammy acting won't be eye-rolling either!  Netflix has a bunch (not all) of episodes from the original series run. Worth checking out. |
The Eccelston episodes are pretty dark but not in ways that young kids will pick up on. The realization that the Doctor is suffering from PTSD/Survivors Guilt takes a more mature mind to notice.
