The "Name/Day/Time of the Doctor" trilogy that says goodbye to the eleventh Doctor and hello to the twelfth was much darker/mature than any others from the rebooted series. At least from what I remember. As a childhood fan, seeing Tom Baker was awesome. I'll remember these episodes longer than any other from the reboot so far.

I would highly recommend introducing the earlier Doctors before the reboot. The FX obviously suck, but the stories were still a lot of fun. I think 7 or 8 is perfect for these, as the FX usually aren't as important for kids anyway. The somewhat hammy acting won't be eye-rolling either! Netflix has a bunch (not all) of episodes from the original series run. Worth checking out.
The Eccelston episodes are pretty dark but not in ways that young kids will pick up on. The realization that the Doctor is suffering from PTSD/Survivors Guilt takes a more mature mind to notice.
