when you sell stuff you can't control what you get so you a bunch of random crap. To identify stuff you HAVE to have scrolls of wisdom.

You can trade town portal scrolls 1 for 1 for ID scrolls. Or you can trade in five white items for a ID scroll. It can be pretty awful, but eventually you will have a steady diet of ID scrolls that drop to where you'll have a stack of 20 and ID'ing the random magic stuff you find won't be worth it because you'll have rares in nearly every slot.
As far as currency, people trade Blessed/Chaos/Divine Orbs and Orbs of Regret for late end items it seems. The former randomly changes the properties or stats of rare/unique items, and the later remove 1 passive skill point from the grid to re-allocate.
