Part of what made Roots great was that it was supposedly a story told to him by his grandmother. When it turned out it was just another screenplay, I was disappointed.

Yeah, he conjured up many of his family stories out of thin air, but it still evoked the time and kick-started an interest in black history and genealogy. It was still just a brilliant story, expertly told, even though from a research point of view, he kind of shit all over the bed.
Lawrence of Arabia wasn't historically accurate, but I wouldn't want to see that remade, either.
