The "Mereneese knot" is a sticky situation that GRRM wrote himself into that caused the huge (10 year) delay in him finishing A Dance with Dragons. It had to do with the arrival and departure of various characters in Mereen. Basically, he strands Dany in Mereen, and he doesn't know how to get her out.
