I'm also not crazy about how much Apple controls the device. The central control through the App Store limits so much. I'm not sure I want to spend the money to buy one just to have Apple tell me one of the apps I want to download is again there policies.

That remains one of my biggest nerves with Apple. I loathe it. Imagine if all desktop computers had that lockdown.
I'm hoping they're going to drop it at some point. Except for the porn/illegal apps. (Then again, torrents wouldn't and couldn't be considered illegal. If they are, web browser is too.)
