Walt wasn't scared in the least when he thought he was about to die. He played it off like he was but as soon as he got his message out to Jesse about going to kill Gale he was as cool as they come.

Because he knew that he was most likely going to survive after getting the message out. Before that he was begging for his life...offering to cook for free, even offering up Jesse's life, before eventually deciding to kill an innocent (which Gale most certainly was...he didn't deserve his fate and knew nothing of the Gus/Walt feud). I don't believe it was an act, it was pretty much the same desperation that he showed in this most recent episode (and throughout the entirety of this season).
Over the course of the 4 seasons, Walt has turned into an evil, egotistical, pathetic character. It's hard to see how he can redeem himself at this point.
