The first is great, but not in the way we expect sports movies to be in the 21st century. The ending is gripping, but much of the first 3/4 is somber and contemplative, some might even say slow and plodding. It's more about setting up the desperation and semi-poverty of Rocky and his demeanor.

II is like a white trash boogie nights, the Rocky having established himself and gotten a little coin in his pocket.

III is total 80s kisch, fun, but not deep or overly important.

IV is back to basics with a pinch of America **** Yeah. Great is you dig on unconventional workout porn [ie, lots of log splitting and boulder dragging] and victory over stoic Goliath bad guys.

V I barely remember, except that the son and Tommy were not stellar actors.

Balboa I haven't seen.
