I'm trying to think of people from the show that got bit but I'm having trouble. The only one that comes to mind is the guy that went crazy shoveling graves back in ATL. After the walkers attacked the camp, he had gotten bit on the stomach. The black chick noticed he was looking sickly and pale and questioned him about it. The bite itself wasn't even that major (he was able to hide it from the others) but his health deteriorated pretty rapidly. Plus the characters in the show seem to have a wealth of cuts and scrapes that never seem to get infected. It has to be the virus.
I'm saying a bite from a rancid corpse, regardless of the zombie virus, would be enough to cause sepsis and potentially death rather quickly. How many pathogens is in a rancid corpse mouth that eats nothing but meat?

I'm convinced these people are becoming sick from blood infections, making the bite appear to be the source when it is not.
