Some may say that turning down UCLA for VCU is crazy, but its pretty smart. UCLA has expectations. He is already golden at VCU.
He can accept athletes with lower academic histories, and after going to the Final Four, his margin for error is probably 25 times what it would be at UCLA.
He is making 1.5 million dollars a year for at least the next 10 years. He could never get back to the Final Four, and retire a very rich person. Howland won something like 233 games in the last 10 years. If Smart does that at VCU, he will be getting another 10 year extension. Sometime in the future VCU may end up playing on Shaka Smart Court.
But at UCLA he could work there 10 years, go to 3 Final Fours, and win his conference championship and finish 25-10 in his final season, and still get fired.
