This trade pretty much locked us out of another 3 seasons or so of getting a Luck type Qb high in the draft, a quarterback that could be our starter for 10+ years and take us to the playoffs year in year out. This was sacrificed in the AS trade for a 6-8 (<-- hopefully) win season this year. Way to think long term brah. Congrats!

Also, when you said, "chance to win next year...," did you mean just win more games than 2 or to possibly compete for a championship? Because if you are saying more than 2 then I agree, but competing for a championship is definitely not in the equation unless 15 starting Qb's in the league all get season ending injuries. Because Alex Smith will not get us to a Superbowl, something Geno possibly could do in a few seasons with development. Hell, P. Manning took 8 years before he got to the Superbowl, so don't be so hard on Geno who has yet to play a League game that ****ing matters.
I have to ask... why is it that Alex can't get you a SB in 2014... or 2015?

You draft a rookie... maybe he develops into something.. maybe not.. Most rookies could develop beyond the ceiling of an Alex Smith.. but how to predict which ones? and do we even know for sure Alex has reached his ceiling?

So, say that Alex and KC have a decent 2013 year (8-9 wins) as the team builds confidence and respectability. KC then adds even another upgrade or two to go along with the current players having a year and another full offseason to absorb the schemes. 2014.. deep playoff run.. and who knows?

Alex is already a good QB... and the Chiefs players, coaches, and most fans want to win games now. You can't be sure of a rookie developing into even a good QB.. certainly less likely with a new scheme implemented and a lack of proven offensive players.

Alex also has at least 5 years left in the league. If the Chiefs coaching and personnel is worth a shit? Alex can get you there. May not happen in a year 1 scheme on both sides of the ball, like 2013.. but Alex has a much better chance of getting the Chiefs a SB in the next 2-3 years than some unidentified, mystical rookie QB to develop.
