McCarthy shows in a lot of his works that he thinks many people place little or no value on the life of another. I think he's just showing that, in the end, it doesn't matter. He died, it ended up meaning nothing.
I think that's the realization Tommy Lee Jones comes to at the end when he talks about his dream. He's saying the good is gone, it's all just shit now. None of it means anything.
In other books by McCarthy he has characters say it more directly. The Judge in Blood Meridian basically says, Why not kill people? Not only is it ok, it's something to enjoy.
