last i heard the Blizzard was dumming down Diablo III and having a less complicated skill tree and auto-assigning of points etc.

One of the key points of Diablo II was the fact that you had to build your character correctly or you got your ass handed to you in Hell.
normal - cruising
nightmare - feeling strong
Hell - crying to yo' momma
like lots of skills ... synergies are key so you can specialize you character to your game play preference.
