This is why I didn't see the ending to be perfect, even if good. To me, it felt like they were forcing a good guys vs. bad guys battle and trying to make Walt come out a hero or good guy... it felt a little forced. And the result is a lot of people interpret it as Badass Walt making everything right. As redeeming. But because they tried to cram so much in, the setup often felt a little incomplete.
Jesse killing Todd... that was redemption.
Gilligan's a clever guy. It's possible his intention was to oversimplify the "redemption." So I wouldn't put it past him.
