Holy ****in' hell...I just saw the qualifying speeds. 164 at Dover?!!?
I used to go all the time in the '70s and '80s, and it was a big deal when someone broke the 130mph barrier. Guys like Cale Yarborough were just about sideways all the way through the turns...you could see the tire smoke. The guys who wouldn't (or couldn't) dirt-track it had to jam on the brakes at the end of the straight.
And I guess that's the biggest difference today. With modern setups those guys can just go bat-out-of-hell into the turns and still make it out the other side.
