As a writer of comics off and on since 1992, there's a lot more work involved than you might think. It's very akin to writing a script of a play or a tv show. You have to develop the pacing to make the action flow from one panel naturally to the other. I find that my classes I took in college when I was toying with a Broadcast Journalism degree help a lot. I tend to storyboard while I write to try and figure out exactly how many panels I need to get the main point I'm developing across.
<rant> I don't understand why people who write books are looked up to, and people who draw are looked up to, but if you combine the two talents it's automatically "inferior, childish" product.</rant>
