Just think of the political overtones though. When the original movies were made, we were at the height of the Cold War. The Republican Rebels were "spreading democracy" and the Soviet-like Imperials were ruling the galaxy with an iron fist.
30 years later, the Republican Rebels are horrible, freedom is corrupt and evil, and the Imperial insurgents are the new champions of the common man.
