There was nothing hackneyed about that episode. If you're building to a climax you need conflict, and Walt isn't the tactical genius he's made out to be. Great episode. But you have to admit, for a show that has been so perfectionist in its execution, the shootout in the last episode felt a little off. I get the flare for the dramatic, but odd to see a bunch of guys with terrible aim (some of them hitmen) shooting rounds of firearms without taking any kind of cover. Not a criticism by any stretch. Maybe there was symbolism around it. It just felt off to me.
