Neither tackle (Fisher or Joeckel) is an elite level prospect in the mold of an Okung or Thomas. They can get basically the same guy in the third through fifth round.
Alex Smith wasn't extended past the two years left on his current deal and hasn't finished but two full seasons and is coming off a concussion that sidelined him in 2012.
I think that they look at the ceiling Geno has to offer versus the other players and they pull the trigger. Both Reid and Dorsey have picked players very similar to Geno Smith in McNabb and Rogers and it's paid off for them in spades.
They aren't pressured to take any one single position and they are operating from a true "BPA" situation. I think Geno is the "BPA" in this draft when you consider his experience, production and upside, as well as the position he plays.
