I think you're on the right track. The most important thing you can do (that you can control) in order to attract people to you is to be interesting. The second most important thing is to put yourself in situations where you meet new people. My guess is that your roller derby club will help with both.
Have fun with it. Hang out with the friends you make. When you meet (female) friends of friends with whom you hit it off, trade numbers and hang out. Most of my best friends are people who I met that way. The more people you hang out with and can relate to, the more likely you are to meet a guy who clicks with you. It's really no more complicated than that, but you have to be willing to branch out.
If you only hang out with the same people, you are limited in who you are going to meet even if they are great people. Women struggle to make friends after college, so the roller derby thing is perfect.
