I mean they signed up for a job for which they are well compensated. It is potentially dangerous but probably no worse mortality than a 7-11 nite worker in the hood.
Why are they on a pedestal and worshiped by many as if they are gods walking the face of the earth? I appreciate their service but I appreciate the pilot of my plane when I fly too. What's the scoop?
I'm all in favor of the "a fair day's work gets a fair day's pay" angle, but have you seen how little servicemen and women get paid? My friends that I have in the military get lots of benefits (which they sorely need... healthcare and all that) and not all that much in salary. When you reduce the benefits, they aren't left with much at all, so they absolutely deserve more for the intensity and the amount of work that they put in.
And I would take that approach for any employee in any job. Either pay them REAL money for the work they do or keep their benefits. Don't cut into them.
