In order for the 49ers to go through with this trade, they'll have to pay Alex Smith's roster bonus which hits them pretty hard. The same roster bonus they were talking about trading him or cutting him a week before the off season start.
So if they want compensation out of him, they have to pay for it, which works for us because his salary isn't nearly as expensive as Cassel's will be next year after the 49ers eat the roster bonus. We'll actually be netting a starting QB for about half of Cassel's worth on the 2013 roster, and eat next to nothing by comparison for cutting cassel or better yet, dishing him.
So in reality, you ask yourself. Is getting Alex Smith for about 60% of his salary for the 2013 season worth a 4th round pick to you? While you basically make all of that money back in Cutting Cassel from the same roster?
You're basically getting Alex Smith for a 4th round draft pick when it is all said and done, and the 49ers have to bite the bullet on the roster bonus, which they are already cash starved on, and they lose a player.
They end up with marginally more cap room, but one less player they already paid, so really it kind of shafts the niners who are going to have to restructure and gut their roster and load up on draft picks if they want to keep their defense the way it is.
