Doesn't Alex Smith have 2 years left on his current contract?
If so, I would be OK with a Smith/Smith combination as our depth chart 1/2 for the next couple of years.
I also want competition, and when it is Geno's time to take over... it happens!!! If that is this August... then so be it. If it is November... fine. If it is next August... it's all good.
