There's never been an end game in Diablo. The "end game" in D3 is no different than previous Diablo's. Gear grind is the end game.
What made D2 successful was the ladder system. Also, you couldn't respec whenever you wanted for free. You had to make a new character and build it from scratch so you had to have a game plan from the start, which made the game have plenty of replay value that D3 doesn't have.
One of my favorite parts of Diablo was trading, though. There wasn't an auction house so you were constantly interacting with people in games and channels trying to make deals. D3 just swings and misses in the social aspect. You are required to have an internet connection, but you are basically playing a single player game. It's retarded.
