While Gus was an awesome character, and Mike is now my favorite...
Showing Skylar and other characters not as "cool" is a necessary evil of the show. The scenes with Skylar should have a dramatic impact on what is about to happen.

If the show was 100% Mike, Hank, Walt and Jesse... it would be pretty lame imo.
