One day my friend in the Air Force (major in the security forces) was at the pistol range with his boss, a Lieutenant Colonel. His boss shot himself in the calf while drawing his pistol. Said at first he just stood there, looking at the hole in his pants, which were bloused into his boots. My friend got him to sit down, untucked the pants and was then greeted by a torrent of blood from the wound. He made a full recovery, but was so humiliated by the incident - a decorated combat veteran command-level officer shooting himself at the range - that he retired almost immediately. And of course the story spread like wildfire.
Ouch on multiple fronts. Certainly made me feel better about my refrigerator incident.
I guess the moral of the story is be careful - even the best trained and most experienced can get burned by a careless second.
