Women are fickle. The slightest hint of you being clingy can send a girl running. I have found that at first you need to show them you don't care. Don't treat them like crap by any means but show them that if its not them its someone else. If they fall for you, then you can start showing them you care and they will take it one of two ways.
A) They will return the favor and all will go well
B) They get scared off because a relationship was never what they really wanted.
